Uudis: VoLTE mobiilikõned liiguvad Eestis massidesse

More and more people in Estonia are starting to use VoLTE (Voice over LTE) service, which was rolled out by Telia last summer.

In July 2016, Telia became the first carrier in the Baltics and one of the first in the Nordics to offer VoLTE calls in its 4G network. At the time, only Nokia Lumia users were able to make VoLTE calls, but in March this year 4G calls became available for Android phones as well when Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 EDGE received VoLTE support. The list will soon grow to include other phones from Samsung and other manufacturers.

Previously the user had to activate VoLTE service separately, but now it is activated by default for those with an upgraded VoLTE phone and 4G data subscription.

“This makes it possible to take new generation mobile calls to masses. We estimate that the number of VoLTE users in Telia’s network will grow to twenty thousand or more in the coming months,“ said Silver Kurrikoff, Head of Internet and Voice Services at Telia Estonia.

According to him, the current number of Telia customers who are using VoLTE is more than 2,400 and the number is constantly growing.

VoLTE enables excellent call quality and almost instant call connection speed. Those use data on their phones will be glad to notice that the phone will not be switching to 3G upon making or receiving calls. In the future, VoLTE will enable many useful add-on services, which we know from VoIP calls (voice calls over the Internet) – for example, retrieving caller ID from company’s list of contacts, call recording, etc.

Of course, Telia’s 2G and 3G services will also remain operational alongside VoLTE in order to provide voice service for users of older phones as well. Additionally, if the signal strength is weak in the 4G network, VoLTE phone will be able switch to 2G or 3G without breaking up the call.
