Chat apps and video calls
Choose the chat app that suits you best.
Most common:
- SMS messaging – a feature of the phone’s built-in messaging app.
- WhatsApp – A user-friendly and widespread app used by many people of all ages. Allows text, voice, and video calls. High likelihood that family members and friends use it.
- Messenger (Facebook) – Since they are probably already familiar with Facebook, Messenger can be a logical extension to learning about social networking platforms.
Start with an app that is user-friendly and intuitive. For example, Messenger after Facebook is already a familiar environment.
1. Install one messaging app on the device.

2. Place the app icon on the home screen of the phone and show the learner what it looks like.
3. Let the learner send the first test message and make the first video call.
Do not forget to calmly show them how to:
- adjust the volume, answer and end calls
- turn the camera and microphone on/off
- find friends and contacts in the app and add new ones
- send photos and videos
Emphasise that the social network should be rather small and that there is no need to reply to suspicious emails from unfamiliar contacts.
